The Steyr 185 was introduced in 1955 to close the performance gap between the Steyr 182 and the Steyr 280. As a three-cylinder tractor with 45 hp, it was particularly suitable for combine harvester operation and could also reliably carry out transport tasks, despite its low top speed. However, important features such as the double clutch, power lift, pulley and operating hour meter were only available at an additional cost.
